Day 7 fridge and freezers

I don't think it is too bad
Fridge and freezer.  My fridge gets cleaned out regularly.  Gross things in the fridge grosses me out.  I do not want to open something growing its own farm.  No thank you!  But some how there is always gunk on the shelves, what is up with that?  And then my freezers... well, in my defense I have a hard time getting into my extra freezer since we got the new car, because I need to back out to really get in there, no joke :-(

So lets start with the fridge.  I cleared each shelf one at a time and cleaned them.  Then anything that needed to be thrown out was and anything that needed to be eaten soon was jotted on the dry erase board so I can plan them into meals this week.  Yes, I am that good.  Basically other than that some things that were out of place were moved back (kids) and that's about it.

Neat sure, but clean
The door is a little busy, but I plan to plan this weeks menu around what is in the door.

On to the inside freezer.  If I didn't think it was going to be used in let's say, the next month.  It went out into the big freezer.  Everything got wiped down and well, that's about it.

Do I really need all this?

Neat and orderly and all things I plan to use soon
This is why my freezers are outa wack.  I just have enough room to squeeze an arm in to get what I want out for the day since we go the new car
Next up the freezing monster.  After about 2 minutes tackling the beast, oh! and after putting my car in the driveway, I ran inside to grab my ski gloves.  I highly recommend you start with this step, but whatever floats your boat.  I tried to plan out what I would want inside soon and moved it there.  Then I tried to decide where I wanted everything.  Antelope went on top, pizza chicken and potatoes next, followed by "bone chicken," turkey, and waffles, then finally I put veggies and fruit in the drawer although most of the fruit is inside for my smoothies.  YUM!!!  The door is mostly stuff from the garden and the hubbsters beer glasses.  A few things got thrown out from the freezers as well, but very little.  On to something warmer shall we?

All neat and orderly and nothing I need this week
Ok, a little nuts-o in here

Day 6- Under sinks

So I didn't think this would be a tough job and it wasn't...it was a GROSS job.  So, when we moved in there are issues right?  This one had a lot and one that we kind of ignored for what, 11? years now was waiting for me under the kitchen sink.  The previous owner let the garbage disposal rust through and this in turn rotted the wood on the bottom of the cabinet under the sink.  Obviously, we got a new garbage disposal put in and lived with they quirky sunken in floor of the cabinet.  Well, after pulling everything out (not sure when or IF I have done that before) I found the wood to no longer just be warped, but truly rotted out.  There is no moisture anymore, it was just from the previous damage.  So, out cam the shop vac to get up all that old splinters of wood.

Under kitchen sink Before
Ok, step one done, on to step two.  Going through what was under there.  What in tarnation WAS under there?  Seriously, you would think I never got into this cabinet.  Liquid dishwasher soap??  I only buy powder and this is a HUGE bottle, some bottle of aluminum cleaning powder that did NOT fit with my clean green lifestyle, straight to the TRASH, 2 bottles of wasp spray, why 2 and why in the garage and not in the kitchen?  My gardening gloves!?!!?  What!?!?  A nasty sponge, 2 bottles of veggie spray, and a can of Oust (Do they even still make that stuff?? and then all the normal stuff I expected to find down there, trash bags, dish soap, POWERED dishwasher soap and my cleaning gloves.  So then I tossed old stuff, put mislocated things away and returned everything else in an orderly fashion.

Kitchen after the insanity.  Check out my cool spray bottle rack :-)
Then I thought, lets take this a step further.  I wanted to hang my spray bottles on the door like I had seen on Pinterest.  They used a towel rack certainly we had an extra towel rack hanging around, but alas, I could not find one.  What I did find however was a paint stir stick and some nails.  Voila!  A nice easy convenient place out of the way to hang my spray bottles!

On to the bathroom, ok I thought this might be rough.  I mean look at that mess!  I have no idea why it looks like this.  Seriously, I took everything out, folded it, got rid of a couple bleach stained washcloths and put everything back neatly.  Voila!

Undersink in bathroom before

After  scary easy
Moral of the story, sometimes organizing is quick and simple so, just get in there and do it.  Other times it is going to be a gross nasty b!t... so be prepared.  Either way I am loving my neater house.

Day 5-Purse

Ok you don't get a picture of my purse, but seriously, how is this organizing my home?  I don't know about you, but my purse needs cleaned out all the time.

So here is what I do on a biweekly basis.  Go through those coupons and check expiration dates, ok, maybe this one happens to be more like a bimonthly task, but it still has to be done.  I had to pull out my check book this time.  I don't like to carry it around with me, but it was in there so, out it came.  Receipts, do they mate in there?  Geeze!!  And why do I get a 5ft receipt when I just bought toilet paper?  Why do I even get a receipt?  Is someone going to accuse me of stealing tp?  I certainly am not going to return it.  Sheesh.  Did I get off track AGAIN?  Sorry, ok there were some gum wrappers in there, you know, just incase.  I also went through all those store cards.  I know I don't need 80% of them AT ALL and the other 20% I can use my phone number for.  I kept the ones I use regularly, grocery store, Michaels, Pet co ect.  All the others?  TTFN.

Tomorrow is "under sinks" which is 1.5 sinks.  Under the kitchen sink (25% trash can), and under one bathroom sink, but half is towels.  The downstairs bathroom is a pedestal sink so.... I am thinking I am goo there!  Another easy day.  It is ok, I see the craft room in my future......

Day 4.5

Ok what do you think of the new updated layout?  I started this blog in 2005 and have never update the template.  I really liked the old template, but it looked really skinny on the new wider screen I have.  I figure, "Hey, it has been 8 years, why not!"  Don't worry I will get to the purse later.  Don't get to excited though, I try to keep it pretty cleaned out.

Day 4 Laundyroom

Don't you hate when you think there is noting wrong with a room and then you are like "serioulsy?!?!  Why do I have this?"  Yeah, that was my laundry loom.  Now my laudry room is really a closet so, I didn't really even think there was anything I was going to do.
"Here is my before picture... here is my after picture... I dusted off the lint??"  BUT thankfully for anyone so unlucky to stumble upon this blog there was a little more to todays "challenge."  Ok VERY little, but lets pretend shall we?  Ok, see the 2 containers of laudry soap on the top shelf in the before picture?  Yeah... those were empty.  I am not a hoarder I SWEAR!!!  I saved them for when I made my own laundry saop and I DO make my own laundry soap and I found a receipe I love... it just isn't a LIQUID receipe.  Yes, I have been making powdered detergent for a while now and these containers are still here.  Sigh, I forget things.  Ok, so step one threw those in the recycling bin.  NEXT?  Ok, I used dryer bars they come with a holder that holds the bar in the dryer and it stays there for about 3 months, they are pretty nice.  I had 2 extra holders in there collecting lint.  Why?  WHY I ask you!?!?  Ok, besides that I wound the cord around my iorn (that is used to iorn on Girl/Boy Scout patches more than iorn clothes, but I digress,) organized a little basket I keep extra supplies in and moved all the blankets to the same shelf.
It really was another pretty easy day.  So far this 21 days is easy peasy, but I know they won't all get done in less than 5 minutes.  Did I mention my fear of the craft room day?

I am also not sure why my lighing source changed?

Day 3

Today was pretty easy too, don't worry, my day is coming with craft area. Yikes!  I have underbed drawers so I went through my side of the bed throwing out everything outdated to small/short, or to big and frumpy.  With the current diet I don't want to have those clothes to fall back on so they are GONE.  No going back now!
Ok, the kids beds have been organized for years.  The girls have 3 underbed boxes, one for babies, one for barbies and one as a misc toy box.  Plus their barbie cars.  I will go through those tomorrow while everyone is at shcool.  It is crazy how attached my oldest is to everything including broken toys. On to the boy's room. His underbed boxes include matchbox cars, legos and superheros. His room is always the cleanest. Maybe I will see if he is ready to part with some cars (that he NEVER plays with) and we can give them to his little god brother. Looking forward to the next 18 days!bro

Organization Day 2

Ok, today I cheated.  I tackled the closet last week.  Therefore, I do not have a before picture so, I will paint you a word picture.  I had a 3 drawer plastic thing at the bottom of the closet.  One drawer for hats, one for gloves and one for scarves.  It was fine, but it ment all the snow boots were thrown at the bottom and the vaccuum had to be muscled into place.  What I did was get rid of the drawers and replaced them with this shoe organizer.  Each person has their own row with 4 pockets plus we have an extra row for umbrellas.  This gave me enough floor space for all the boots and the vaccuum.  I also cleared out the top shelf and got rid of somethings that were broken.  Done for day 2!  Bring on...

I love multipurpose items like shoe organizers!

21 Days of Organization Day 1

Todays place to organize was the medicine cabinet.  It was a pretty easy place to start.  I did throw away some old medication and baby items.  Kinda past the baby gas meds phase.  Anyway, here is my before and after.  I mostly turned everything so the label was out, tossed old stuff and put things togethef ie kids meds and vitamins.  Hoping for a bigger challenege tomorrow.

Wordle

I found a great new way to waste time.  Like I really needed another way to waste time, but whatever.  This website is called wordle.  You type in any words you want and it jumbles them into a pretty piece of art.  I did mine in traditional Christmas colros (red and green for those of you from another planet) and typed in a very Christmasy verse from Issiah chapter 9.  I really like the way it turned out.  I suppose I could print it out, frame it and add it to my Christmas decorations, but I think I will leave that to the folks that accutally get paid to blog.  That would be a pretty sweet gig, but alas, no one is ging to pay for my rambilings.  Anywho, check out Worlde when you need to waste a chunck of time.

How to freeze a pie

First, prepare your pie per the recipe.

Next wrap with press and seal.
Then wrap with foil.

Finally, use a sharpie to write what the pie is and baking instructions, before popping in the freezer.

Homemade Applesause

This year we were lucky to have a neighbor share their abundance of apples with us.  I decided the bulk should be applesause.  It is healthy, as I am in diet mode again, and uses up a lot of apples.  So here is the simple recipe.
Incidents
5Lbs apples cored and quarterd (not peeled)
1 cup water
1 lemon
Optional -
Sugar, cimmamon stick or vanilla bean

Heat all ingredients in a large pot until squishy.  Yes, that is a technical term. Take out cinammon stick or vanilla bean if you used it. Then grab your immersion blender and go to town!  Let it cool an freeze.  It is so good that I burned my tongue trying it out.  So, worth it.
Now, on to apple pie, again no peeling.  Why do people peel apples and potatoes ?  I just don't get it.  The peel is the nutritious part and tasty to boot.

Where am I going?

A friend of mine posted on Facebook, that she is hitting the second half of her life (44) and wants to do something that will be as exciting as the first half.  Currently her ideas include, politics (she is already pretty active in this one,) acting, and adventuring.  I think this is great and I honestly believe she plans to follow through with something.

So here I sit looking at the next 3/4s of my life.  What is it going to hold?  What are my plans?  Why was it so much easier to dream big when we were littler?

I remember being little and planning on opening my veterinary practice in the same office building as my best friend's medical practice.  Your one stop shop for all your medical needs for you and your pooch.  She was going to marry a rich old man and I was going to marry another vet and have 8 kids.  Oh yes, we could dream big back in the day.

So, here I am.  Where am I going.  Can I finish my degree in Biochemistry?  Sure.  Can I climb Mount Kilimanjaro?  Sure.  Can I run a half marathon? Sure, but not going to.  In a couple years I will have all 3 (not 8) kids in school all day.  At that point, my world kinda reopens.   What will it bring?  Do I wait and see or plan to attack?  I guess I have 2 years to figure it out.

Recent weight loss

Now that I found this new text to speech app on my phone I think it will make blogging even easier today I want to talk about my awesome weight loss in the last 4 weeks. 4 weeks ago I sat at 151 pounds it wasn't pretty when I got on the scale I only expected it to say 140 what a shocker. I had joined a group that was competing against each other to lose weight so this is my first weight loss journey so far it's been great at this point I am down to 144.4 hey not bad for just 4 weeks.  What have I been doing well sleep tight mount the crap like Fritos in queso. 0h I love Fritos and queso.  I have also turned my lunches into either a a salad or bi soup.  I try to remember to have breakfast every morning My breakfast at included a recipe I found on Pinterest for refrigerator oatmeal so good

Of course there's the exercise to the first 3 weeks I was focusing on running since I was preparing for the Warrior Dash. I would say I ran 3 miles at least 3 days a week. But this last week I've been focusing on potties and doing the physical therapy stretches that my physical therapist recommended for my shoulder. That was a pretty weak weak weak but I managed to lose 2.2 pounds a very big week! So that's my boat for today but with this text to speech thing um I guess its speech to text I plan on Blogging a lot more talk to you later.

Why ya gotta be so cool?

Ok, I am so NOT cool enough to be a blogger.  I read my friends' blogs of course, but I also read craft blogs and cooking blogs.  That is my niche I suppose.  One lady has 7 kids, another... 11!  One lady does 100 days with no processed foods, not so much as cake for the kids at a birthday party.  They make these beautiful "easy" crafts that never turn out that way when I do them.  I never see a single weed in the garden blogs.  In my garden you can barely see the vegetables amongst all the weeds.  Oh, and the pictures are always perfect.  Seriously, who are these people?  I am pretty sure they must be robots.  I mean I only have 3 kids and can barely find the time to blog.

Ok, so we know I am not octomom, with the manicured garden, immaculate home, Martha Stewart's worst enemy that somehow finds the time to blog so, who the heck am I?  I am a wife and mother of 3.  I do not home school.  I would never home school.  If anything I am anti home school.  I have never met a home schooler that isn't a Christian through an through.  What the heck is up with that?  Don't get me wrong, I know Jews, Muslims, and a ton of atheists, but NONE of them home school, only the Christians.  What ever happened to living in the world people?  You can tell me I am wrong until you are blue in the face and the face of the matter is I became a Christian, because a family of strong Christians left their girls in the public schools system to be a light in the world.  One of those girls was my best friend.  I think my train of thought might have been diverted to a soap box so, I will leave that for another post.  My apologies, ANYWAY where was I?  Oh yes, who am I?  I am an active member of the PTA.  I raise my hand to volunteer WAY more than a normal sane person would.  I love photography, unfortunately my refurbished SLR only works when it wants to.  Other times it argues with me about shutter speed and won't let me change it.  Again, I digress, I lead a Girl Scout troop.  The girls in my troop will be in 4th and 5th grade next year.  They are very near and dear to my heart.  They all love scouting and have asked if I will continue the troop even if my daughter decides she doesn't want to continue.  Basically, I am stuck here for awhile.  I go to a church where I am crazy about the teaching, but not much else.  I miss the community of our old church, but not the teaching.  Guess you can't have it all.  My house is a mess, ALWAYS.  I have been cleaning for 2 days for company coming this week.  You could never tell.  I admit to being a little lazy.  I have little self confidence.  But I am a great cook.  The things I make usually are not pretty, but they taste good so, who cares right?  I miss being around animals all the time.  Due to my husbands new allergies we no longer have any furry pets.  Of course, this weekend I am pet sitting 4 dogs, 4 birds and 2 turtles so, I will save this complaint for another times.  I am tired and I am broke, but somehow I am basically happy.  Sorry, this is a no drama mama here.  So, if that is what you are looking for in a blog, keep it moving.

So, I am not as awesome or cool as most bloggers, but I only have one follower so, who really cares right?  Besides, when all is said and done I do this for myself and no one else.  I love to reminise about things that happened, dreams I had, and even thoughts I had.  So, here is to me, I am a weedy garden, but atleast one person loves me!

Disastrous Day

I grew up in a small town called Woodland Park.  Woodland Park is just 18 miles west of Colorado Springs.  At the time it was a 3 stop light kind of town.  To get to the city of Colorado Springs there is an 18 mile mountain highway called Highway 24 or Ute Pass.  Between the 2 towns is a nice hiking area called Waldo Canyon can be found.  I have hiked there a few times.  It isn't a secret, but it certianly isn't well known, or so that was the case this time last week.

I first heard there was a fire in Waldo Canyon sometime Saturday.  Not long after it started.  I imediatly panicked.  I knew it was to close to Woodland Park.  I knew it was to close to Colorado Springs.  I knew it hadn't rained in weeks.  I knew the trees we dry enough they might as well be tooth picks.  I knew the High Park Fire had been raging for weeks.  I knew resourses were limited with the number of fires in the state. I knew panicking was justified and I knew there was nothing I could do about it.

The first concern was my parents bussiness.  Basically located where this highway and the city of Colorado Springs meet.  I got pictures, lots of pictures, sent to me by my parents.  Maybe one every hour or two.  The shop was my concern, the shop was their concern.  That concern was with me Sunday and Monday, by Tuesday night I might have thought the worst was behind us, maybe everything will be ok, but by that afternoon the situation changed.

Tuesday morning there might have even been hope.  I believe I heard the words 5% containment and the fear subsided a litte, but not for long.  Hollywood has nothing on what was about to happen.  About 2:00 another fire breaks out close to me and far to close to the city of Boulder.  One ridge stands between this fire and the city limits of Boulder.  I am glued to the TV, disapointed that my short lived hope was gone.  The news crew would show the Waldo Canyon Fire for 10 minutes and the go to the Flagstaff Fire (aka the Boulder Fire).  Then the worst happened they stopped showing the Flagstaff fire.  The wind kicked up in Colorado Springs, about 100 miles south of Boulder.  The fire grew by leaps and bounds.  Neighborhoods were quickly evacuated even parts of the Air Force Academy on the other side of town from where the fire started.  The panic returned.  I get a call from my sister.  They are trying to get home from the store.  They are off the highway, because it is so congested with people trying to evacuate ash is falling on the car and she is trying to keep ME calm on the phone.  I am glued to the TV as pictures are texted in from my parents and 2 sisters.  I am frantic.  They call when they get home.  I offer to bring down the truck to fill up.  They are not evacuated yet, but it is getting closer and I am an hour away.  My mom telss me to stay here, that she is packing their truck and car and putting things in the trunk of my youngest sister's car.  Finally, a reason to smile.  My mom never let any if us drive very far while we were living at home.  I was not allowed to drive on highway 24 so, basically I couldn't drive anywhere (remember I said the town only had 3 stop lights).  So, the thought of my mom putting things in the trunk of my sister's car.  Knowing this meant if need be my sister would not only be driving out of town, but driving out of town during an evacuation with a thousand other panicked drivers.  Ok, maybe it isn't a funny situation, but I laughed.  Not out loud af course, moms have a way of kicking your butt even when you are grown and miles away.  I am not sure how that works yet as my kids are still at home, but stay tuned, I will let you know as soon as I figure out how to do it.  All laughing aside, things are about to go from bad to worse.  I wouldn't have been able to get there is time anyway, because before I could have reached them, they closed the highway.  As the sun sets I watch on the live feed as the fire creeps into twon, my HOMEtown.  It is horrific.  I am on Facebook, other friends that have moved away are watching in horror as well, because by this time we have made national news.  The thought is in the back of my mind, what about Woodland Park, Waht about Woodland Park, What about Woodland Park?  Nothing, there is no news about the back side of the fire.  My firends still living there are not online now, what does that mean?  I watch as the fire starts consuming houses.  The Flying W Ranch posts that it is gone.  I am sick to my stomach.  I am yelling no, no, stop, stop.  I want to go out there and fight it my self.  Of course, I can't.  I know that would only make the situation worse.  I don't sleep Thursday night.  I know my family is in the path of this monster. I know they are not leaving until they are told to leave.  And I know there is nothing I can do.  How does a girl sleep with all that?

The next morning brings no good news, but no worse news.  There hasn't been much change since last night.  If you consider 2am "last night."  The town is covered in smoke.  I try to convince my pregnant sister to come stay with me. Just for the day to get out of the smoke and enjoy the ac, but she won't.  Her in-laws are moving in.  Atleast for the time being.  And once again in the afternoon the wind picks up.  60 mile per hours gusts.  The reporter is having a hard time staying on her feet and my stomach belly flops again (can a stomach belly flop?)  I sit on pin and needles and watch, they are showing nothing but smoke we can not tell what is gonig on and they don't really know either.  Then the unexpaected happens, at 5:00 they cut to regular programming.  What!?!!?  My hometown is burning and you show Everybody Loves Raymond???  Ok, I am a little out of date, I don't recall what the show was, but you get the point.  I text my mom "What is going on, the news cut to regular progaming.  Good news?" ... nothing.  I text my sis the same ... nothing.  Finally my sis gets back to me and says things are about the same and the wind has died down.  I breathe a sigh of relif and take my son to his baseball game.

So, here we are.  It is Friday night.  We are at 25% containment, but this is not time to get comfortable.  347 have lost their homes, 2 have lost their lives.  So far I only know of one person that has lost their home, but that number could change.  I don't look forward to going back down.  To see what this fire has done to one of my favorite places and my favorite national forest will turn my stomach again I am sure.

Continued prayers will be needed for a long time.  For those that lost their homes and the families of those that lost their lives.  And prayers for rain.  It is only June and this is not the only fire in the state by a long shot.

Baking Soda & Hydrogen Peroxide!?!?!?!

Why didn't someone tell me about Baking Soda & Hydrogen Peroxide sooner?  I guess maybe I am just more receptive now.  Who knows, but I just learned about this miracle cleaner LAST NIGHT!  I read it on a blog somewhere.  She did a cookie sheet, so that is where I started and I was way underwelmed.  So I tried my drip pans from the stove.  So glad I took before pics, because again I was unimpressed until I looked back at the original pics.

Then the kicker!  I cannot use oven cleaners, because the fumes are not good for our bird, or us I am sure.  I have a steamcleaner that I have used for years, but it stopped working.  So, I emptied the box of baking soda from the freezer.  Now, keep in mind my baking soda boxes go from cabinet to fridge to freezer so, this box was far from fresh.  I added the hydrogen peroxide and waited.  Over 3 hours I waited.  But wow, did it ever pay off.  I used an old bath towel to mop up the majority of the mess and then a wet dish towel to finish up.  Easy!  As you can see it isn't perfect, but I will take it.  I just need to figure out how to get the walls.  Hope you take this and run with it.

Dang Pinterest! Fooled again!

Ok, it has happened to all of us.  We go to check out a receipe that has been on our board for months just to find it is a BS site.  So annoying!

It happened to me just this morning.  I was excited to try out the ham sliders for lunch.  When I went to get the acctual receipe from the website BAM!!!  You just won a free gift card from Pinterest!  Ya right, do you think I was born yesterday?  So, I made my own receipe based off the picture.  And dang it all they turned out just dandy.  A little dry, but if you bake them covered in foil, I think you can get around that.  So, here is the receipe for my version:

Whole Wheat Dinner Rolls

Shaved Honey Ham

Swiss cheese sliced

A little garlic powder, oragano & basil to taste

I took my trusty bread knife and sliced open the rolls, layered them with ham & cheese then sprinkled on the herbs.  Threw the tops on and baked in a 250 degree oven for about 10 minutes.  Again, I recomend covering in foil to avoid a crispy top.

There you go!  Fast and easy.  And a receipe not just a pretty picture to boot!
